Mentor Coaching
For the purpose of credentialing, ICF defines the Mentor Coaching as an applicant being coached on their coaching skills rather than coaching on practice building, life balance, or other topics unrelated to the development of an applicant’s coaching skill.
Coaching Supervision
ICF defines Coaching Supervision as follows:
“Coaching Supervision is the interaction that occurs when a coach periodically brings his or her coaching work experiences to a coaching supervisor in order to engage in reflective dialogue and collaborative learning for the development and benefit of the coach and his or her clients.”
Coaching Supervision is different activity from Mentor Coaching. Coaching Supervision offers the coach a richer and broader opportunity for support and development. In Coaching Supervision, the coach is invited to focus much more on what is going on in their process and where the personal may be intruding on the professional.
Individual Coaching Supervision or Mentor Coaching Sessions
As a supervisory/mentor coach, I interact with the students, who are studying to be credentialed coach as ACC, PCC or MCC for ICF, and Health and Wellness coach for NBC-HWC. We have a reflective dialogue and collaborative learning over their coaching work experiences for the development and benefit of them as well as their clients. I listen to their recorded sessions, provide written feedback as well as coaching dialogue over their client interaction.
Mentor coaching sessions are similar in nature, except that the client recordings are not used to offer feedback on ICF or NBC-HWC Core Competencies rather a coaching dialogue takes place.
Semi-Private Individual Mentor Sessions
These sessions are available upon request for parties of four or two individuals. In these sessions, participants coach one another under Tijen’s observation and supervision. Participants will receive feedback from other participants as well as verbal and written feedback from Tijen. Although these sessions will not have the depth of individual mentoring since there is no review of the coach recording, still quite helpful for coach’s development.
Assessments for Coaching
As a certified assessor and mentor coach, I listen to the recorded session and provide feedback based on ICF and/or NBC-HWC competencies perspective prior to student submissions for the certifying organizations.
Weekly Mentor Coaching Sessions
Package of four 90 minutes Mentor Coaching Sessions: These sessions are designed to enhance coaching skills of the participants, from both the art and science of coaching perspectives. Participants will practice coaching under Tijen’s mentoring. Large portion of the sessions would be dedicated to practice and during the practice, Tijen will point out the techniques that might be helpful during the coaching inquiry. Sessions would also include ICHWC and/or ICF Competencies covered during the practice.

Deciding on a credentialing path…
As a mentor I am often asked which credentialing path to choose, specifically, NBHWC (Natioal Board Health and Wellness Coaching) or ICF (International Coach Federation). In the below video I am answering the most common questions about that. There is also an accompanying guide of comparison listed below the video.
