What Actually Makes a Coaching Question Unhelpful?

Well-intended questions can accidentally shut clients down. In my Comprehensive Coaching Taxonomy, I call these “unhelpful inquiry and reflection patterns.”

They look supportive on the surface, but they:

  • Collapse the client’s perceptual space
  • Redirect their meaning-making
  • Overlay the coach’s interpretation onto the client’s internal architecture

In this 5-min clip from my latest podcast, you’ll see real examples of:

  1. Inquiry that leads instead of reveals
  2. Reflections that distort the client’s narrative
  3. Coach-generated meaning replacing client-generated meaning
  4. Missed perceptual cues that change the session’s trajectory
  5. Domain mismatch — the #1 thing mentors must catch

These aren’t “bad coaching” moments. They’re evidence. And mentors/assessors need to spot them with absolute clarity.
