As autumn fades into winter, certain trees, like oaks and beeches, hold onto their dead leaves. This phenomenon, marcescence, a botanical term for the retention of dead plant organs, can teach us a lot about the struggle to let go.
Trees hold onto their lifeless leaves for several reasons. The deadened leaves might protect the tree’s buds from harsh winter conditions, delay the release of nutrients until spring, or deter herbivores from eating the tender new buds. This natural process ensures the tree’s survival and growth.
When humans hold onto past experiences, relationships, or habits, their benefits are not as clear to them on the surface. There is a possibility that protection or clinging to the familiar may act as a shield from projected pain or uncertainty. We might delay letting go, believing that these memories or habits will be helpful or comforting in the future. The fear of the unknown can make the discomfort of the present seem more bearable or bring forth some level of familiarity amid changing circumstances.
Releasing requires us to bring our fears to the surface and settle them. Just as trees eventually shed their leaves to make way for new growth in the spring, we, too, must learn to shed what no longer serves us at some point to grow and thrive, embracing new opportunities and experiences.
The art of letting go is a journey of self-discovery and growth. By learning from nature, we can find the strength to release what no longer serves us and embrace the new opportunities that lie ahead. Just as trees prepare for a new season, we, too, can prepare for a budding future by departing from what is lifeless and deteriorating from the past.
I am delighted to introduce my upcoming Goal Getter Group Coaching Program, which will support you on a journey like that.
